Olivia Weston is the temporary house mother at Behala's Mission School and she has been characterized as a caring individual who would like to make a difference to the children's lives. Olivia's caring nature is revealed mainly through her thoughts and behaviour. Throughout the story Olivia recounts her trip to Colva Prison with the males. She starts this section detailing how your woman " fell into love” together with the Behala kids and the " eyes taking a look at me, plus the smiles” (p. 78). Her compassionate mother nature is even more reinforced through her actions when she helps the boys visit the prison. In fact , not only does the girl act as their particular escort, the girl pays for their very own new clothing even though the " prices amazed [her]”, and she pays for the taxi fare though she " gulped when ever [she] observed the meter” (p. 83). Clearly, Olivia does no matter what she may to help the boys, even though they attain their goals at her expense. Characterisation via thoughts and actions has located the reader to see Olivia as a compassionate individual, whose remarkable qualities often result in her being altered by these she many cares for.
